Yacht Charter in the Maldives

The Maldives is a nation built entirely from the sea — 26 atolls and more than 1,000 coral islands scattered across the equatorial Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka. With a maximum elevation of just 2.4 metres above sea level, the Maldives is the flattest country on Earth, and its entire existence is defined by the ocean that surrounds it. For yacht charter, the Maldives offers an experience unlike anywhere else in the world: live-aboard cruising through some of the planet's richest marine environments, with pristine coral reefs, abundant pelagic life, and the extraordinary visual spectacle of sand banks and lagoons in shades of blue that seem almost artificially vivid.

The Atolls

The 26 atolls of the Maldives are spread across an area of 90,000 square kilometres of ocean, but the land area totals just 298 square kilometres. North and South Male Atolls, surrounding the capital island of Male, are the most densely developed and the most accessible for charter yachts. Baa Atoll, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is famous for the Hanifaru Bay Marine Protected Area — a natural funnel where, during the southwest monsoon season, manta rays and whale sharks congregate in extraordinary numbers to feed on baitfish. Ari Atoll is considered one of the world's premier diving destinations, with exceptional visibility, large numbers of whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, and eagle rays, and a density of coral growth that rivals anything in the Indo-Pacific.

Marine Life

The Maldives is ranked among the top five diving destinations in the world, and for good reason. The archipelago sits at the confluence of several major ocean currents, which bring cold, nutrient-rich water upwelling from the deep ocean and create the conditions for extraordinary concentrations of marine life. Whale sharks — the world's largest fish, reaching up to 12 metres in length — are present year-round in the Maldives and regularly encountered by snorkellers and divers. Manta rays are seasonal visitors in large numbers, particularly around Baa Atoll from May to November. Reef sharks, eagle rays, tuna, barracuda, and an overwhelming diversity of reef fish complete the underwater picture.

Charter Experience

Charter yachts in the Maldives operate as floating hotels, navigating from atoll to atoll to access the best dive sites, sand banks, and fishing grounds. A typical day might begin with a sunrise snorkel on a protected reef, followed by a sail to a sand bank for lunch and swimming in water so shallow you can stand on the sand with turquoise lagoon stretching to the horizon in every direction. Afternoons are spent diving or snorkelling at a different site, and evenings on deck watching the equatorial sunset, which happens with dramatic speed just before 6 pm throughout the year.

When to Visit

The Maldives has two monsoon seasons: the northeast monsoon (November to April) brings dry, sunny conditions with light winds — the classic charter season; and the southwest monsoon (May to October) brings higher humidity, occasional rain, and stronger winds, but also the best opportunities to see manta rays in the atolls. Sea temperatures remain a constant 28 to 30 degrees Celsius throughout the year, and visibility underwater is typically 20 to 30 metres in the dry season. The Maldives is one of the very few charter destinations where the marine life is genuinely world-class at every point of the compass.
