Yacht Charter in Baa Atoll, Maldives

Baa Atoll is one of the most ecologically significant and biologically rich atolls in the Maldives — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designated in 2011 for the extraordinary diversity and abundance of its marine life. Located approximately 100 kilometres northwest of Male, Baa Atoll contains 75 islands, 13 of which are inhabited and many of which have been developed into exclusive resort properties. For charter yachts, Baa Atoll is a destination of exceptional interest: the combination of accessible dive sites, world-class snorkelling, remote uninhabited island anchorages, and the extraordinary marine spectacle of Hanifaru Bay makes it one of the finest sailing and diving destinations in the Indian Ocean.

Hanifaru Bay

Hanifaru Bay, within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles in the Indian Ocean — a natural funnel where, during the southwest monsoon season (June through November), manta rays and whale sharks congregate in extraordinary numbers to feed on the dense plankton blooms that are channelled into the bay by the tidal currents. At the peak of the season, aggregations of 100 or more manta rays have been recorded feeding simultaneously in Hanifaru, creating a spectacle of cetacean grace that has been featured in multiple nature documentaries. Access to Hanifaru is carefully managed by the Maldives Marine Research Institute to protect the feeding mantas, and snorkelling rather than scuba diving is required within the bay.

Uninhabited Islands and Anchorages

Baa Atoll has a larger proportion of uninhabited islands than most Maldivian atolls, and many of these are accessible by charter yacht for overnight anchorage and shore exploration. The uninhabited islands typically consist of a small land mass of sand and coral, fringed by a beach of extraordinary whiteness and backed by a small interior of coconut palms and vegetation. Anchoring off one of these islands, swimming ashore in water that is perfectly clear to the sandy bottom at 3 or 4 metres depth, and spending the night with no lights visible except the stars overhead is the quintessential Maldivian charter experience and one of the most profound experiences of natural solitude available in the Indian Ocean.

Diving and Marine Life

The dive sites of Baa Atoll are among the finest in the Maldives outside the well-known atolls of the south. The thilas (submerged reef pinnacles) and kandu (channels) of the atoll are famous for their fish diversity and for the regular presence of pelagic species — hammerhead sharks, silvertip sharks, grey reef sharks, and large schools of trevally and barracuda patrol the channels on the incoming tide. The coral gardens within the lagoon, though affected by bleaching events in warm El Nino years, still support an extraordinary diversity of hard and soft corals, nudibranchs, and reef fish. Turtle nesting on the uninhabited island beaches adds a conservation dimension to the charter experience.
