Yacht Charter in Marmaris
Marmaris is one of Turkey's most celebrated yachting destinations — a beautiful resort town set at the head of a deep, pine-fringed bay in the southwestern corner of Mugla province. Protected on three sides by forested mountains and open to the sea to the south, Marmaris offers a natural harbour of remarkable quality, and its large marina complex is one of the best-equipped in the entire eastern Mediterranean. For yacht charter, Marmaris serves as both an outstanding destination in its own right and the ideal gateway to the magnificent sailing grounds of the Gulf of Hisaronu, the Datca Peninsula, and the Greek islands of Kos and Rhodes just a short sail away.
The Town and Marina
Marmaris town centre is built around the old harbour, dominated by a restored 16th-century castle that today houses a small archaeology museum with views over the bay. The narrow cobblestone streets of the old town — Bar Street being the most famous — are lined with restaurants, bazaars, and cafes that fill with visitors every summer evening. The grand Ataturk statue on the waterfront, the fresh fish market, and the covered bazaar selling Turkish spices, textiles, and ceramics are all within easy walking distance of the main marina. The YachtGet office in Marmaris is located in the Adakoy district, one of the most scenic corners of the bay.
Sailing Grounds
The sailing grounds accessible from Marmaris are among the finest in Turkey. The Gulf of Hisaronu, reached by sailing west past the Nimara Peninsula, is a wide bay studded with beautiful anchorages — Bozburun, the traditional gulet-building village; Selimiye, a tiny harbour with a few waterfront restaurants; and Dirsekbuku, a quiet cove where the only sounds are birdsong and the gentle lap of water against the hull. The Datca Peninsula, a long, narrow finger of land pointing west toward the Greek island of Symi, is one of the wildest and most beautiful stretches of coast in Turkey. At its tip lies Knidos, the ancient city where the famous Aphrodite of Knidos statue was kept — the ruins, including a circular temple and two natural harbours, can be visited directly from the yacht.
Greek Islands Day Trips
Marmaris is one of the few charter bases in Turkey from which the Greek islands are genuinely close. Kos is a two-hour sail to the west; Rhodes, with its magnificent medieval old city and the Palace of the Grand Masters, is three hours to the south. The Turkish-Greek border here is one of the most easily crossed in the world, and many charters based in Marmaris incorporate at least one Greek island into their itinerary, adding an international dimension to what is already an outstanding sailing holiday.
Climate and Best Season
The Marmaris charter season runs from April through October. July and August are the hottest and most popular months, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35 degrees Celsius and the sea reaching a comfortable 28 degrees. The shoulder months of May, June, September, and October offer slightly cooler temperatures, fewer visitors, and the same beautiful scenery — many experienced charterers consider these the finest months to sail the Marmaris coast.
