Yacht Charter in Mallorca
Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and offers the most diverse yacht charter experience in the western Mediterranean. From the glamorous superyacht marinas of Palma and the luxury hotels of Port Andratx to the wild northwest coast where the Serra de Tramuntana mountains — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape — plunge sheer into the sea, and from the long sandy beaches of the Bay of Alcudia to the remote coves of the east coast, Mallorca provides a charter destination of remarkable variety that rewards both first-time visitors and those returning for their tenth season. The island is large enough to support a full two-week charter itinerary without repeating an anchorage.
Palma de Mallorca
Palma, the island's capital, is one of the most beautiful cities in the western Mediterranean — a city of considerable architectural distinction, with a Gothic cathedral (La Seu) of exceptional scale and beauty rising directly above the sea, a magnificent Arab bath complex (the only well-preserved example in Mallorca), and an old town of Renaissance mansions converted into boutique hotels, art galleries, and restaurants. The waterfront of Palma has been extensively redeveloped in recent years, and the Paseo Maritimo, stretching for several kilometres between the cathedral and the Bellver Castle on its forested hill above the city, is one of the finest maritime promenades in Spain. The marinas of Palma — Club de Vela, Real Club Nautico, and Marina Port de Mallorca — are among the best-equipped in the Mediterranean.
The Serra de Tramuntana
The northwest coast of Mallorca, dominated by the Serra de Tramuntana, is one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in the Mediterranean. The mountains, rising to 1,445 metres at Puig Major, fall steeply to the sea in sheer limestone cliffs that are largely inaccessible by road — making them most easily appreciated from the water. The small ports of Soller (with its beautiful art nouveau architecture and tram connection to the inland town of the same name), Deya (where Robert Graves lived and wrote for most of his adult life), and Valldemossa (where Chopin and George Sand wintered in the Carthusian monastery) are all accessible by sea and worth extended visits.
Coves and Beaches
The east coast and south coast of Mallorca have some of the finest coves (calas) in the Balearics — small, sheltered inlets of turquoise water accessible by yacht and largely undeveloped. Cala Mondrago, within a protected natural park; Cala Figuera, a deep inlet of fishing houses and colourful boats that has somehow escaped heavy development; and the extraordinary Es Trenc beach in the south — a 6-kilometre sweep of white sand backed by sand dunes and salt marshes — are among the finest natural features on the island. The Bay of Alcudia in the north offers a long, gentle beach ideal for families and for yacht anchoring in shallow, calm water.
