The walls and the town within them represent one of the finest examples of Renaissance fortification in the western Mediterranean and a remarkable contrast to the modern resort culture of the island below. The harbour area, Ibiza Town (Vila), has excellent restaurants, boutiques, and a social atmosphere that is sophisticated and surprisingly relaxed outside the peak summer weeks.

Formentera

The island of Formentera, a 30-minute boat crossing from Ibiza, is one of the finest sailing destinations in the western Mediterranean. Ses Illetes, the long, narrow sandbar that forms the northern tip of Formentera, is consistently rated among the finest beaches in Europe — two sides of turquoise, ankle-deep water surrounding a causeway of white sand, with the towers of Ibiza visible on the horizon to the north. Es Trucadors, the very tip of the sandbar, is a meeting point for yachts and speedboats from across the Balearics every afternoon in summer. The rest of the island, relatively flat and easily explored by bicycle, has excellent restaurants, salt flats full of flamingos, and an atmosphere of gentle calm that contrasts beautifully with the energy of Ibiza across the strait.

Coves and Anchorages

Ibiza has some of the finest anchorages in the Balearics — small, rocky coves of turquoise water accessible by yacht and largely deserted outside the peak summer period. Cala Salada in the northwest, with its wooden fishing houses built directly into the rock; Cala d'Hort in the southwest, with the offshore islets of Es Vedra and Es Vedranell rising dramatically from the sea; and the string of coves along the east coast — Cala Nova, Cala Boix, Cala Mastella, Cala Llenya — are among the finest.
