The Town and its Famous Landmarks

Mykonos Town is one of the most recognisable townscapes in the world. Little Venice, the row of multi-coloured fishing houses with their balconies extending directly over the sea, is the island's most photographed corner. The five famous windmills on the Kato Mili hill above the town date from the 16th century and have become the unofficial symbol of Mykonos and of the Cyclades as a whole. Petros the Pelican, the island's official mascot, can usually be found somewhere near the old harbour, posing for photographs with considerably more patience than most celebrity animals. The Church of Panagia Paraportiani, a complex of five chapels fused into a single flowing white structure, is considered one of the finest examples of Cycladic architecture in Greece.

Beaches and Beach Clubs

Mykonos has some of the finest beaches in the Cyclades, ranging from the family-friendly Agios Stefanos in the north to the legendary party beaches of Paradise and Super Paradise in the south. Psarou Beach, a sheltered cove on the south coast, is the island's most exclusive stretch of sand — a favourite mooring for superyachts whose guests take tenders ashore to the beach clubs. Elia Beach and Kalafatis Beach, further east, are less crowded and more naturally beautiful. All of these beaches are accessible by yacht, and anchoring offshore to take the tender ashore is the most pleasurable way to experience them.

Delos — Sacred Island

The tiny uninhabited island of Delos, just 15 minutes by boat from Mykonos, is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Greek world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Birthplace of Apollo and Artemis in Greek mythology, Delos was the religious and commercial centre of the Aegean for centuries, and the ruins of its temples, theatres, agoras, and mosaic-floored houses cover almost the entire island. No one is permitted to sleep on Delos, making it accessible only as a day trip, and the afternoon light on the ancient marble — warm gold on white stone above blue sea — is one of the great visual experiences of Mediterranean sailing.
