A collection of 89 islands, islets, and reefs compressed into a relatively small area of sea, Kornati is characterised by bare limestone — almost entirely without vegetation except for the sparse dried grasses and sage — whose white and grey surfaces contrast dramatically with the deep blue of the surrounding water. The archipelago is a national park, and anchoring overnight within its boundaries requires a permit purchased in advance. A handful of small family restaurants serve grilled fish and local wine from stone buildings on the island shores.
