Yacht Charter in Split
Split is Croatia's second city and the main charter hub of the Dalmatian coast — a vibrant, bustling port city built around and within the walls of the 4th-century Roman palace of the Emperor Diocletian. The palace, covering seven hectares and housing in its heyday some 9,000 people, still stands largely intact at the centre of the old city, its apartments, temples, and galleries transformed over 1,700 years into a living urban neighbourhood of cafes, restaurants, boutiques, and private homes. The result is one of the most extraordinary urban environments in Europe: a Roman palace still inhabited, its basement corridors supporting the life of a modern city above. Split is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most fascinating cities in the Mediterranean.
Diocletian's Palace
Diocletian's Palace was built between 295 and 305 AD as a retirement complex for the Roman Emperor, who had voluntarily abdicated the throne of the empire he had built. The palace covers an area of roughly 30,000 square metres and is divided into a formal imperial half to the south — with the Mausoleum of Diocletian (now the Cathedral of Saint Domnius), the Temple of Jupiter, and the imperial apartments — and a more functional northern half containing barracks, servants' quarters, and storage. The basement of the southern hall, preserved beneath the medieval buildings constructed on top of it, is largely intact and gives a vivid impression of the original scale and construction of the palace. Today the basement is used for exhibitions and performances.
The Dalmatian Islands
Split is the gateway to the central Dalmatian islands — Brac, Hvar, Vis, Solta, and the Kornati archipelago further north. The ferry crossing to Brac takes 50 minutes; to Hvar, one hour; and to Vis, 2.5 hours. By charter yacht, these distances shrink further, and the central Dalmatian islands are among the most rewarding sailing grounds in the Adriatic. Hvar is justifiably one of the most popular destinations in Croatia — its Renaissance town square is the finest in Dalmatia, its lavender fields turn purple in June, and its beach clubs and nightlife are the best in Croatia. Vis, the furthest inhabited island from the Croatian mainland, is wilder and more authentic, its wines (Vugava white and Plavac Mali red) excellent and its restaurants among the best on the entire coast.
Food and Wine Culture
Split and the central Dalmatian coast have a food culture of considerable quality and depth. The local fish market, held each morning below the walls of the palace, is one of the finest in the country. Prstaci (date mussels, now protected), skolji (sea shells), and Dalmatian prosciutto (prsut) are among the specialities unique to this part of the Adriatic coast. The wines of the Dalmatian hinterland — Posip from Korcula, Grk from Lumbarda, and Plavac Mali from the Peljesac peninsula — are outstanding and pair perfectly with the local seafood.
