Yacht Charter in Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in the world — a perfectly preserved medieval republic enclosed within massive limestone walls, its baroque palaces and churches gleaming white above the deep blue Adriatic. UNESCO has listed it as a World Heritage Site, and its old city, built largely in the 14th and 15th centuries after an earthquake destroyed much of the earlier Byzantine settlement, is an architectural ensemble of extraordinary harmony and beauty. Arriving in Dubrovnik by yacht — sailing along the coast from Split or from the islands of Hvar and Korcula — and seeing the city walls and the terracotta rooftops reflected in the water is one of the great experiences of Mediterranean sailing. The city has been further brought to world attention as the filming location for King's Landing in the television series Game of Thrones.
The Old City Walls
Walking the 2-kilometre circuit of the Dubrovnik city walls is the single most popular activity in the city and one of the finest urban walks in Europe. The walls, ranging from 1.5 to 6 metres in thickness and studded with towers and bastions, enclose a remarkably intact old city of marble-paved streets, baroque fountains, Romanesque churches, and magnificent palaces. The Rector's Palace, the Cathedral, the Dominican and Franciscan monasteries, and the Sponza Palace (used today as an archive and memorial to the victims of the 1991-92 siege) are among the most important monuments. The walk along the top of the walls, with views on one side down into the streets and gardens of the old city and on the other out to the Adriatic and the island of Lokrum, takes about 90 minutes.
Nearby Islands
The islands closest to Dubrovnik — Lokrum, the Elaphiti Islands, and Mljet — are among the finest on the entire Dalmatian coast. Lokrum, a densely forested island just 600 metres from the old city, is a nature reserve with a botanical garden, a ruined Benedictine monastery, and a population of semi-wild peacocks. The Elaphiti Islands — Kolocep, Lopud, and Sipan — are a gentle day sail from Dubrovnik, each with car-free villages, excellent beaches, and traditional restaurants serving locally caught fish. Mljet, the largest and most impressive of the southern Dalmatian islands, has two saltwater lakes within a national park that are among the most beautiful natural features in the Adriatic.
Cuisine and Nightlife
Dubrovnik has the most sophisticated restaurant scene in Croatia, with a range of establishments from informal konoba tavernas serving freshly grilled fish to elegant fine-dining restaurants in restored Renaissance buildings. Black risotto, fresh oysters from the Peljesac peninsula, peka (slow-roasted meat under a bell-shaped lid covered with embers) and the local dessert rozata — a Dubrovnik version of the Portuguese pastel de nata — are among the highlights. The old city at night, when the day-trip crowds have departed and the cobblestones are lit by lamp and moonlight, is extraordinarily atmospheric.
