Yacht Charter in the Caribbean
The Caribbean is synonymous with paradise — powdery white beaches, translucent turquoise water, and the steady warmth of trade winds that have powered sailing ships across these seas for centuries. Stretching in a great arc from the Bahamas in the north to Trinidad in the south, the Caribbean's thousands of islands offer some of the most rewarding yacht charter cruising in the world. Whether you are island-hopping through the British Virgin Islands, exploring the untouched reefs of the Exumas, or discovering the Franco-Dutch charms of Saint Martin, a Caribbean charter delivers a level of sensory pleasure that is difficult to replicate anywhere else on the globe.
Sailing Conditions and Best Season
The Caribbean charter season peaks between November and April, when the trade winds blow reliably from the east-northeast at 15 to 25 knots — ideal conditions for sailing between islands. The skies are largely clear, the humidity comfortable, and the water temperature a consistent 27°C to 29°C. This period also coincides with the Northern Hemisphere winter, making the Caribbean the most popular escape from grey European and North American cities. The summer months (May to October) are officially hurricane season, though many charter operators continue sailing during this period with careful weather monitoring — and rack rates drop significantly, making it an attractive option for experienced sailors.
The British Virgin Islands
The BVI remains the undisputed capital of Caribbean sailing. A tight cluster of 60-plus islands and cays, they lie within easy reach of each other — most passages taking between 30 minutes and three hours — making them perfect for a relaxed first-time charter. The Baths on Virgin Gorda, with its giant granite boulders and snorkelling grottos, is one of the Caribbean's most photographed spots. The Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke is the birthplace of the Painkiller cocktail. The reef systems around Anegada attract divers from around the world. And the protected anchorages of the North Sound offer flat-water sailing and kite-surfing in equal measure.
The Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean
The Bahamas offer a different Caribbean experience: vast, shallow banks where the water glows an almost supernatural shade of turquoise, remote cay anchorages where you may be the only boat for miles, and swimming pigs at Big Major Cay that have become genuinely world-famous. The Exumas alone could fill a month of exploration. Meanwhile, the Eastern Caribbean islands of Antigua, Saint Martin, and the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique add a European flavour — excellent restaurants, lively carnivals, and a cultural depth that surprises many first-time visitors.
Marine Life and Watersports
The Caribbean's warm, clear waters are a playground for watersport enthusiasts. Snorkelling and scuba diving reveal a riot of coral, angelfish, sea turtles, and — if you are lucky — whale sharks and manta rays. Most charter yachts in the region carry stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and water skis, and larger vessels often include jet skis and wakeboards. Kite-surfing is a major draw in several locations, particularly in Turks and Caicos and the BVI.
